Do I need extra rims for the winter? What are the differences? Would you prefer aluminum or steel? These are questions that many car enthusiasts ask themselves every year when the cold season arrives and the tires need to be changed. We explain when you should drive which rims.
Many are not sure whether their normal aluminum rims will survive the winter and this fear is not unfounded. In the winter months, the rims come into contact with chippings, road salt and the weather conditions of the cold season. Normal aluminum rims quickly oxidize along the rim flange, causing bubbles to form and the tire's air to slowly escape.
But many manufacturers, including us, produce extra winter-proof aluminum rims that can withstand the dangers of winter. The winter rims are sealed with a special color material, especially on the rim flange, and thus protected from oxidation. So if you want to enjoy your rims all year round, you should go for weatherproof models. Unlike winter tires, you can also drive these in the summer without any problems.
Another option is steel rims, which can also be driven all year round. However, with steel rims, you have to make major compromises, especially in terms of appearance. For tuning fans, winter-proof aluminum rims are definitely the right choice.
